Return of the Dragon

 The Dragon Prince is Back.

The Netflix animated series The Dragon Prince (now co-titled Mystery of Aaravos is back for its 5th season. My younger kid and I are watching is now - elder child was in the mix originally, but she had something better to do when we started. It wouldn't surprise me if she decided to catch up and/or watch it on her own, but it also wouldn't surprise me if she abandoned the title entirely. She's a tween, such is her prerogative.

The show's calling card has always been representation, which I believe it does very well, except for one particular bit that remains stuck in my craw.

There are several types of elves present in the show. One set, the Sunfire elves, is clearly, phenotypically the Black elves. The nightskins, with shouts to the #BlackFaeDay collective. Dope, more representation, right? Except that this particular elves have an accent reminiscent of Africa's French colonies. Yes, of all the voices they could have chosen for this group of elves, they decided that even in this richly constructed fantasy landscape, they were colonized. It's literally the only thing I dislike about the show, but it's a big dislike. I really wish they'd made some different choices.
